These pieces are the first in a new series I'm working on called "Emerging Surfaces".  They are more like sculptural wall pieces than traditional paintings.  One of the things I wanted to achieve with this series is to use all recycled and repurposed materials. I have been hoarding things for a while now, starting with some mortar shell packaging that my husband picked up at a shooting range in Fayetteville, NC.  They are cylindrical in shape and have a hard styrofoam feel to them.  I  began thinking of a way to make them into art.  This was the beginning of Emerging Surfaces. I arrived at this title for the series because all of the pieces are basically emerging from the surface.  Many times people think of a painting as  a two-dimensional surface, but these are three-dimensional paintings. Plus when they are lit from different angles, shadows are cast and it creates another level of depth and visual interest.

I work in a lot of different mediums and materials and I like getting physically involved in my projects. I'm not afraid to work up a sweat or get a little bloody, as is often the case.  Since these pieces are experimental, I decided to set up my camera on a timer and photograph the whole process via a time lapse video which shows everything happening really fast because a photo is taken every 30 seconds. Even though the little movies happen quickly, you can still catch glimpses of my little chihuahua's making their cameos, be it hiding inside my shirt, sitting on my lap, or sleeping soundly in a near by chair.

I created Emerging Surfaces #2 by cutting up some leftover faux wood window blinds.  When using power tools, it is usually not a good idea to work on such small work (aka, 2x2 inch pieces), but I took a few chances and didn't end up with any serious cuts.  I sanded all the edges and adhered them to a base (in each of these pieces I first start by building a box out of wood and then I stretch the canvas over it.  Several coats of gesso (sanding in between each coat) makes a sturdy base to work on)....I also stitched some metal squares in between the layered faux wood squares to add depth.  I covered it all with a sand textured paint and then spray painted in black then hand painted it with acrylics to look like tiles.

For ES #3, I cut up some PVC pipes of different sizes that I found in the trash.  The cutting was very time consuming but even more time consuming was the part where I hand sanded all the rough edges and sides so they would better accept the paint.  I set up all the pieces of pipe on the base and drew a line in each circle and painted them in different shades of gray.  Then I used epoxy resin to hold it in place on it's base.  I LOVE the "wet" look of the resin.

I still had some of the mortar shell packaging left and some of the PVC pipe, so I decided to do a fourth piece but with more color.  Again, I used epoxy resin as an adhesive to hold everything on the base.
